2014年8月21日How UW’s Final Four team was built

It was June 12, a Saturday, when Traevon Jackson and Frank Kaminsky informed the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball coach in separate conversations they’d be accepting scholarship Justin Britt Seahawks Jersey offers and would join the program’s 2011 recruiting class.
Three days later, a fast rising forward who had recently completed his sophomore season at Sheboygan Lutheran High School decided to end his recruiting process before it had really even begun. A day after earning a scholarship offer with an eyebrow raising performance at UW’s advanced camp, Sam Dekker accepted it and became the first member of the Badgers’ 2012 class.
Nobody could have known at the time that, in the span of about 72 hours, Ryan and his staff had landed three players who would make profound contributions to a Final Four run nearly four years later. Jackson, Kaminsky and Dekker have started every game this season for UW (30 7), which will play Kentucky (28 10) in a national semifinal tonight.
The other members of UW’s starting lineup are senior guard Ben Brust and junior guard Josh Gasser, who were part of the 2010 recruiting class. A little more than a month before Jackson, Kaminsky and Dekker had pledged their allegiance to the Badgers, Ryan and Co. had completed an unusual cycle by receiving a letter of intent from Brust.
There is more than one way to build a Final Four roster, which will be abundantly clear when the Badgers and the Wildcats meet at AT Stadium to decide who will play in Monday’s championship game against either UConn or Florida.
The top eight players for Kentucky are members of either the 2012 or 2013 classes. The latter group includes six McDonald’s All Americans, including double digit scorers Julius Randle, James Young, Aaron Harrison and Andrew Harrison.
The top eight players for UW, meanwhile, are spread out over four classes. The only five star prospect in Women’s Kevin Pierre-Louis Jersey the group is Dekker and even he couldn’t crack the McDonald’s All American roster.
Not that it matters to the Badgers.
"The one thing Coach always says is, ’We can get them here, but they still have to improve, they still have to mesh together, they still have to have the right chemistry,’ " UW associate head coach Greg Gard said.
"Just because whatever stars are behind their name, doesn’t guarantee anything. There’s a lot of teams out there that have a lot of stars behind their (names) that are sitting home."
Rising starsCompiling a roster that would help Ryan get over the hump of reaching a Final Four required patience, an audible or two and some good fortune.
Just take a look at that 2010 class, which includes Brust, Gasser, junior forward Duje Dukan and senior center Evan Anderson. While Anderson was the most highly touted of the group, the other three have had more productive careers on the court.
The class originally consisted of Anderson and Madison Memorial’s Vander Blue, but a scholarship opened up when Blue decommitted. Another scholarship became available when Diamond Taylor quit school following his arrest for a campus burglary, and Gasser quickly gave an oral commitment in September, 2009, after receiving an offer from Ryan.
Gasser is on pace to start more games and play more minutes than any player in program history. Still, Ryan needed to be convinced he was good enough to play at the Big Ten level. After receiving testimonials from his son, Will Ryan, and two former players, Tyler Selk and Steve Showalter, Ryan took a closer look at Gasser.
"All these guys were telling me for a couple of years, ’Hey, this is your kind of guy. This is your kind of guy,’ " Ryan said. "We hadn’t made an offer until I was able to see him, and some things happened where, ’Oh, yeah, we could take a guard.’ Sure enough, we went to see him play. He was really tough. He was really good."
UW stayed in touch with Blue, but he chose to commit to Marquette. That opened a spot for Dukan, who rarely left the bench during his first three seasons at UW but has worked his way into the rotation as a junior.
It appeared the class was complete until Ian Markolf left the team following the 2009 10 season, opening a scholarship. Brust, meanwhile, had asked out of his national letter of intent to Iowa because the coach who recruited him, Todd Lickliter, had been fired.
Iowa released Brust from his letter of intent, but Big Ten rules at the time prohibited players who sign to play for a member school from accepting a scholarship offer from another member school. Brust initially was told by the conference it would not grant him a waiver, but the Big Ten changed its decision after an appeal by UW and Northwestern on Brust’s behalf.
Brust ended up choosing the Badgers and became the program’s all time leader in 3 pointers. Like Gasser and Dukan, Brust www.nflseahawksofficialonline.com/Kevin_Norwood_Jersey_Seahawks was a consensus three star recruit.
And none of the three were UW’s top choice on its recruiting board for that position.
"I think that’s what fuels a lot of guys," Gasser said. "It took a while for me to be able to be recruited, and it kind of fuels your fire a little bit. A lot of guys have gotten here in different ways. But the most consistent thing is guys have come here wanting to work hard and prove themselves."
